ICL Surgery

What is ICL eye surgery?

An implantable Collamer lens (ICL) is an artificial lens that is permanently implanted in the eye. Lenses are used to treat:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Hyperopia (nearsightedness)
  • Astigmatism
  • ICL implantation requires surgery. A surgeon places the lens between the eye’s natural lens and the colored iris. The lens works with the eye’s existing lens to bend (refract) light on the retina, resulting in clearer vision.

The ICL is made up of plastic and collagen called a collamer. This is an aphakic type of intraocular lens. “Phakic” refers to how the lens is placed in the eye without removing the natural lens.

Although ICL surgery is not necessary to correct vision problems, it can eliminate or reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses.

It is also a possible alternative for people who cannot have laser eye surgery. But like most procedures, ICL surgery is not for everyone.

ICL Surgery

You visit your eye doctor a week before surgery. You will use a laser to drill a small hole between the front of your eye (front camera) and the natural lens. This will prevent pressure and fluid from building up in the eye after the procedure.

You visit your eye doctor a week before surgery.

This procedure is performed by an eye surgeon. In essence, here’s what happened:

  • You will use a laser to drill a small hole between the front of your eye (front camera) and the natural lens. This will prevent pressure and fluid from building up in the eye after the procedure.
  • You may also be given antibiotics or anti-inflammatory eye drops a few days before the surgery. This procedure is performed by an eye surgeon. In essence, here’s what happened:You will lie on your back.
  • You will receive a local or mild local anesthetic. This will make your eyes tingle and you won’t feel anything.
  • You may be given a mild sedative to help you relax. You may also be given an injection around your eye, which temporarily prevents you from moving it.
  • Your surgeon will clean the eye and the area around it. Your eyelids are opened with an instrument called an eyelid speculum.
  • Your surgeon will make a small incision in your eye. You apply a lubricant to protect your cornea.
  • You insert the ICL through the incision. The lens is so thin that it can be folded and opened in the eye.Your surgeon will remove the lubricant. Depending on the cut, you can close the hole with a small stitch.
  • You put eye drops or ointment in your eye and cover it with an eye patch.
  • The process takes 20 to 30 minutes. You will then be taken to the recovery room, where you will be closely monitored for several hours.

Your doctor may prescribe eye drops or oral pain relievers. You can go home the same day, but you have to come with you.

You have a follow-up appointment the next day. Your surgeon will examine your eye and review your progress.

You will have follow-up visits 1 month and 6 months after surgery within the next year. Your doctor will also arrange for you to have regular checkups once a year.

Advantages of the embedded Colomer lens

Micro Incision Cataract Surgery (MICS) is a technique where the cataract is removed manually through an incision small of about 1.8 mm to 2.2 mm.

Cataract Surgery is done by an Eye Doctor and the Eye Doctor is called Ophthalmologist. The surgery is done on an outpatient basic basis. So this means that no patient needs to stay in the hospital after the operation. This surgery is a safe procedure and very common.

In addition to an improved display, ICL offers many advantages:

  •
  • In addition to an improved display, ICL offers many advantages:This can correct severe nearsightedness that cannot be corrected by other surgery.
  • Lenses are less likely to cause dry eyes, which is ideal if your eyes are chronically dry.
  • It is designed to be permanent but can be removed.
  • This lens offers excellent night vision.
  • Recovery is usually quick because the tissue is not removed.
  • People who cannot have laser eye surgery may be good candidates for ICL.
  • ICL risk

Although ICL surgery is safe, it can cause complications such as:

  • Glaucoma. If the ICL is large or not positioned properly, it can increase the pressure in your eye. This can lead to glaucoma.
  • Loss of vision. Having high eye pressure for too long can cause vision loss.
  • Early cataract. An ICL can reduce the flow of fluid in your eye, which increases your risk of cataracts. It can also occur if the ICL is not properly sized or causes chronic inflammation.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Blurred vision is a symptom of cataracts and glaucoma. If the lens is not properly sized, other vision problems such as glare or double vision can occur.
  • Cloudy cornea. Eye surgery, as you age, reduces the endothelial cells in your cornea. If the cells shrink too quickly, the cornea can become cloudy and vision loss can occur.
  • Retinal detachment.
  • Eye surgery also increases the risk of retinal detachment from its normal position. This is a rare complication that requires immediate attention.
  • Eye infection. This is also an uncommon side effect. This can lead to permanent vision loss.
  • Additional services. Other surgery may be needed to remove the lens and correct the problems associated with it.
  • Preventive measure
  • ICL surgery is not safe for everyone. If you are considering this procedure, talk to your doctor to determine if it is right for you.
Surgery may not be a good option if:
  • You are pregnant or breastfeed
  • in under 21 years old
  • 45 years and over
  • You have a chronic disease that causes hormonal fluctuations
  • You are taking medication for vision problems
  • Have a condition that prevents the wound from healing properly
  • Does not meet the minimum requirements for the number of endothelial cells
  • You need to take other precautions before surgery. For example, you don’t need to wear contact lenses in the weeks leading up to the procedure.

Your doctor can explain the best safety precautions for your situation.
